Durban Harbour Fly Fishing Adventure - Fly Fishing, Durban Harbour, South Africa “Fishing with Mike, it is always an experience. I remember a time when He said meet me at Wilson’s wharf and this at 15h00, just 3 hours before I’ve got to be at work. At Wilson’s wharf it was low tide and since no time was to be lost, we fished the channel into the bay. I was using a 6wt with floating line and he fished with a sinking line. He started to catch some scads at the bottom and advised me to lengthen the leader and use a heavy fly. The only fly that was heavy in my collection at that time, was a new one tied at the club, the ABC Fly. I made the cast straight across the channel and waited for the fly to sink, Mike watching told me to start stripping fast, as if fishing for bass. At the third strip I was on and under His guidance a +-2kg Torpedo Scad was landed within 5min. While my husband used really only go surf fishing during this season, I think now he will have to make it a regular thing. I’m eager to see the pictures. My youngest who caught the big fish is generally quite lucky. He is normally the first to catch a fish off the shore whenever they went in the past couple weekends. Going on your boat was a very different experience for them. Its funny we live so close to the Dam, but we’ve never been there before and my oldest son said that I would have loved the sunset which he took photos of just to make me jealous. Thank you for the most effortless booking I ever had to make. Putting a day together from 4pm the previous afternoon doesn’t really give a person any guarantees, but this worked out beautifully. So the frantic search started and we soon discovered Nikao Fishing Adventures on line. We had booked and phoned Mike to ask all the usual 1st timers questions, and he was very helpful regarding these bombardments of questions. On our 1st deep sea trip as a family, (Mom, Dad and 2 sons) Mike was on time and explained all safety rules etc even before the boat was in the water. Durban Deep Sea Fishing & Inanda Dam Bass Fishing Adventures - Durban, South Africa “On two separate occasions my son Mervyn and I had the privilege to accompany Mike on fishing trips. The first time was on a deep sea excursion from Durban harbour. The time and effort that Mike spends with teaching novice anglers is commendable. His knowledge not just with regards to fishing but with nature as a whole is unbelievable. There is no beating around the bush if you spend a day on his boat. If he says we launch at 06:00 then he means 06:00. When you arrive at the launch site the boat is in the water ready to go. He knows exactly where the fish will be found and it is not a matter of driving around looking for fish. He takes you right to the spot and it is “FISH ON.” If fishing at one spot is a bit slow there is a plan B and of you go to the next site. Even when assisting a 12 year old on the sea for the first time Mike knows exactly how to put him into a decent fish. The second time around we had the privilege to spend two days fishing with Mike at Inanda Dam to catch some bass. As I took my own boat down Mike assisted in doing the necessary registration which really makes it a lot easier when arriving at a new destination. When we started fishing Mike introduced us to “new” method of drop shot. I must admit that I was a bit cynical at first as it is not the standard way of fishing for bass as you are normally taught but brother does it produce! Although Mike brought with his own lures, I made him use my lures just to make sure he does not have some secret lures that he uses and still we caught fish. Again his knowledge of Inanda Dam is excellent and it saves a lot of time looking for fish. The “pigs” did elude us on this occasion but be sure that I will be going back to Inanda to catch them and I will make use of Mike’s service again..” Mervyn G - Gauteng South Africa |
